Augustin Harushimana, Midwife & Global Health Advocate
Augustin Harushimana is a dedicated midwife and maternal health advocate based in Burundi. He is the President and Founder of The Midwife in Action’s Association (MAA Vyara Uheke Burundi), a member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and a recognized Young Midwife Leader (YML) Alumni (2022-2023).
With a strong academic foundation in midwifery, Augustin graduated in 2017 from the University Institute of Health Sciences and Community Development in Bujumbura. His professional journey began as a healthcare provider at Ukwizera Health Center (2012-2016), later serving as a midwife in charge of mother-child healthcare at Misuhuko Medical Center. Since 2017, he has been a Midwife Provider and Health Information Data Manager at the Friends Women’s Association (FWA).
Passionate about improving maternal and child health, Augustin works tirelessly to expand access to midwifery care across Burundi. His work focuses on prenatal consultations, family planning, immunization, combating malnutrition, and reducing maternal mortality. He also leads sexual and reproductive health education for young people, couples, and communities.
In 2023-2024, Augustin was selected as a Twinning Expert for ICM’s Twin to Win Project, strengthening midwifery collaboration between countries. He has undergone extensive training in Project Development, Leadership, Non-Violent Communication, and Peaceful Conflict Resolution. His international presence includes participation in multiple global conferences on maternal and newborn health.
Fluent in English, French, Swahili, and Kirundi, Augustin is committed to advancing midwifery in Burundi by integrating best practices from global midwifery leaders. His vision is to ensure that every woman of childbearing age in Burundi has access to skilled midwifery care, ultimately contributing to a future of safer pregnancies and healthier communities.
